IDEAS:

Thaler & Benartzi (2004) introduce a program called Save More Tomorrow, or SMarT, that has four key ingredients. First, employees are asked to increase their contribution rates starting at some point in the considerable future. Second, the plan increases the savings rate only after a nominal raise, so the paycheck amount is not lower than it was in the past. Third, the savings rate continues to increase with each raise until it reaches a preset maximum. Finally, the employees can opt out at any time. Most of these ingredients do not fit the standard notion of an incentive—they do not offer a higher interest rate or a higher matching rate by the employer. Rather, they simply create a choice architecture (Benartzi et al. 2012) conducive to higher savings rates . Yet, when SMarT program was introduced, it was quite effective: The average savings rate for the partici- pants increased from 3.5% to 13.6% over the course of 40 months-implemented in the developing countries to increase save r ates (can reduce loan interest rate as well)
